Why do stereotypes exist ?
Have you ever thought about why do stereotypes exist in our society? Everyday people are being stereotyped and humiliated because they behave a slightly different than other races and nationalities. Most of the stereotypes fall under the category of negative and false stereotypes. Let’s see why do stereotypes exist in our society and how they influence individuals and groups.
Why do we have gender stereotypes?
When a baby is born, whether a boy or a girl they are forced to perform in a way which society accepts. Our society created the difference between men and women long ago. In early 90’s men were the head of the families and they had upper class jobs at workplace. On the other hand women were either in the factory line working as labors or were staying at homes and working.
Later, Marxist Feminist observed how the work of women were being devalued and they were being underpaid. Such actions proved that men are the ruling class. During 1930-1950 when the great depression arrived and men were sent to wars, the women took place of men at workplace. Then the revolution occured and the situation improved for women. Although time by time the gap between two genders is decreasing to maintain the equality but still some men and women face gender stereotypes regularly. This is the main reason which make it difficult for them to grow and be successful.
According to many human researches it was concluded that stereotyping is a natural thought process which occurs in a human brain itself. People categorize and stereotype other individuals and groups on behalf of the differences of looks, personalities, attributes, religion, culture and many other factors. They somewhat feel superior over other people and nationalities which make them generate different kinds of stereotypes. Most of the times stereotypes are negative which badly affect the victim’s mind and performance.
Why it happens?
We can clearly see that it happens due to lack of knowledge. The other reason is prejudice and ethnocentrism. You feel like your culture, your ethnicity, your nationality and your group is better than the rest of the groups. It then leads to hatred and selfishness. People start criticizing and humiliating other groups because their eyes are small, because they eat dogs, because that group have many nerds and geeks and blah blah. This is how stereotypes are being made.
How can we stop ?
The only way to stop stereotyping from our society it is to start educating our new generation. We should make them understand that people can not be differentiated and compared just because they have a different lifestyle than us, they eat different food than us, they are more into E-games or they are studying for 24/7. We also need to grow a feeling of affirmation and love around us. It will help and we do not become the food for other predators. Start avoiding stereotypes. Stereotyping is a habit which you learn after repeating for so many times. You can easily unlearn it if you start ignoring it. Though we can not ignore it completely but we can try our best to prevent stereotypes.
